WOLVES TAKE THE SILVER AT STATE

2A WRESTLING NORTH SEVIER

The Wolves captured the silver trophy

North Sevier did something it hasn’t done since 1988….  Capture a trophy at the state wrestling tournament.  Although the Wolves fell a little short of their goal of winning the state title outright they took a big step in that direction as the runner up in this year’s title race.   Lead by a great group of seniors North Sevier started off the season well by winning the Panguitch tournament.  By the mid-season 2A duals it was clear the Wolves were in serious contention for the state title this year as they wrestled Millard for the duals tournament title and came up second.  At the 2A divisional tournament North Sevier pulled off a dominating performance as they out scored 2nd place Enterprise by over 100 points and captured the division trophy.

There are always some upsets at the state tournament and as the brackets unfolded it was clear North Sevier would need a few chips to fall their way for a chance to win the gold.   Although we did pick up a big win in the semi finals when Nic Degraffenreid beat Millard’s Jordan Anderson

2A state wrestling tournament, North Sevier's Nic Degraffenreid

Wolf wrestler Nic Degraffenreid takes Millard's Jordan Anderson to the mat

we caught some bad breaks as Colin Lyman lost a contested match in overtime to a Millard wrestler and Henry Bill’s lost a contested match in the first round.   However those  wrestlers battled on and picked up some wins to help secure the silver trophy for the Wolves.
The Wolves performance was a total team effort as North Sevier placed 10 wrestlers.  To lead the pack were two state champions in Bryce Jackman and Brenden Sorenson, They both had not only dominating performances at the state tournament but were dominating all year and both lived up to the hype as the favorites in their respective weight classes.  North Sevier also had three other wrestlers in the finals as seniors Cory Johnson, Nic Degraffenreid, and Dakota Sorenson all took second.   The future looks bright when you have both Cash Allred and Dillon Thurston place 3rd at state.   Reed Udy picked up a fourth place finish to cap off a great wrestling career at North Sevier.  Our upper weights look great for next year after both Colin Lyman and Jesse Durrant took 5th.
It was a great weekend of wrestling and I think all the Wolf wrestling fans were pleased by the performance of the North Sevier team.   The excitement builds as we look towards next year.  With a returning state champion and 4 state placers plus a bunch of wrestlers on the verge of placing we should do well.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK SELECTED AT NORTH SEVIER

Utah 2A champs
North Sevier dominated the 2A Division Championships

It was obvious to Coach Barry Smith and his staff who the “Wrestler of the Week” would be.   The entire team worked extremely hard all week and pulled of the Division B title in a dominating fashion.  The Wolves placed 9 wrestlers in the  championship match and walked away with 6 champions.   Coach Smith said it was more than just those 9 wrestlers, it was a total team effort as North Sevier will take 21 wrestlers to the state tournament.   The domination was evident in the team scores as the Wolves amassed a whopping 336 points compared to 2nd place Enterprise who mustered up 231.     The entire team will look to cash in on this season’s hard work as they head to the campus of UVU in Orem in a hunt for a state title!

DOMINATION…… NORTH SEVIER DEFEATS RICHFIELD

You knew it was going to be a long night for Richfield after 106 lb wrestler Henry Bills took down his Wildcat opponent for the second time, and then let him up.

kevin hill, north sevier wrestling

Kevin Hill is back in a dominating fashion.

Henry went on to win that match and set the precedent for the night…… Domination!  Dillon Thurston, Reed Udy, Brendon Sorenson, and Cory Johnson all came out, dominated the takedowns, then went for the pin, Bryce Jackman won by forfeit.  Cash Allred had the task of facing one of the best wrestlers on the Richfield squad, but after a couple fireman’s carry takedowns you could see the frustration building in the Wildcat wrestlers face.   The domination by Cash continued until he pinned the Richfield wrestler who stormed off the mat and out of the gym.  Zack Beach was having a heyday taking down his opponent at will when he was caught in a move by the Wildcat and lost by fall.  Due to some sickness the 160 and 170 lb weight classes were forfeited and Richfield was able to put a few points on the board.  Dakota Sorenson came out at the 182 lb class and made quick work of Sam Lopez, taking him by fall.  One of the toughest matches of the night was between North Sevier’s Colin Lyman and Richfield’s Jadon Ross.   Early on it looked as if Ross would handle Lyman quite easily, but Lyman wrestled back hard and closed the gap, however it was not quite enough and Ross picked up the win.  Freshman Bo Owen picked up the win by forfeit at the 220 lb class and Eddy Gonzales wrestle tough but lost to his Richfield opponent.

The JV wrestlers did really well, Clayland Curtis, Braxton Baker, Desmond Honeycutt, Mason Lyman, and Jason Robertson all looked good.   The Wolves are glad to have Kevin Hill back, he showed he is ready for upcoming divisionals with his dominating performance.

Next up for the Wolves is the #1 ranked Millard Eagles.   Many in the state say this is the dual of the year as #1 meets #2 just before divisionals.   North Sevier will host the match with the varsity matches starting at 7:00pm.
